Gig Review: The Wanted - The Code Tour: LG Arena Birmingham 1/3/12

On 1st March 2012, British Boy band The Wanted came to the LG Arena in Birmingham on their first UK arena tour called The Code. They brought with them four support acts (Parade, Lawson, Fan Fair and Ben Montague).  The first support act was girl band Parade who got the crowd jumping to their debut hit Louder. They have supported The Wanted before at numerous gigs last year. Next up was new band Lawson their set included debut hit When She was Mine, Standing in the Dark and a cover of Ed Sheeran’s hit The A Team. After Lawson was another girl band called Fanfair. They performed their single The Vaccine while dancing and trying to get the crowd to sing along. The final support act was Ben Montague who got the crowd singing to his debut song, which is out June, Love Like Star and told the crowd that he was ‘honour’ to be supporting The Wanted. In between each support act the crowd was screaming as a person known a ‘The Villain’ dressed in a boiler suit and a red mask came out and filmed the crowd with a flip camera. At the end of the gig ‘ The Villain’ took off the mask when the crowd discovered it was Nathan from the band they went mental also there was a code for fan to type in on The Wanted’s website where they would find the video. After Ben Montague finished, the crowd knew who was on next.

Before The Wanted came on, images of them flashed on the screen whipping the crowd into a frenzy. The arena went dark and the curtain dropped and the band came up through the stage performing Invincible a track off their second album, Battleground.  They then performed their third single Lose My Mind with the crowd singing every word back to them. During the perform Nathan announced ‘Hello Birmingham’ with the crowd replying with screams. They performed three more songs after before leaving the stage for a quick change and then came back and performed Last to Know.  Then Jay tried to do a Brummie accent and they sung Dagger and Heart Vacancy. After performing Heart Vacancy, the boys performed I Want It All and I’ll be Your Strength with instruments showing that not only can they sing live but they can also play live too. After Warzone and another quick change, the boys surprised the fans by coming from the back of the arena through the crowd to the stage. They did this on their first tour last year. They continued to play their instruments as they performed a Coldplay Medley of Viva La Vida, Paradise, Every Teardrop is a Waterfall and Fix You with the crowd sing along (and swaying their arms to Fix You).

They then went back to playing their own songs with Jay telling the crowd ‘We’re now going to sing some songs by a band called The Wanted now’. Say It on the Radio was next a song from their debut album ‘The Wanted’ which was followed by the comic relief song Gold Forever. The last two song of the night were the biggest songs the boys have release. First was their number one debut All Time Low which the crowd was singing loud to and the final song of the night was Glad You Came which went to number one in the UK and also went to number one in Canada. It’s also helped them be successful in America too. They got the crowd jumping and singing all the words. It was a good gig which showed The Wanted as great performs and singers as well as why they are one of (if not THE)  biggest boy band of this decade.
