It's been 3 years since their 6th studio album 'The 2nd Law' and today Muse release their 7th one 'Drones'. What a change 3 years can make! Drones is a concept album and anyone who is a familiar with Muse will know they love a good concept album. They have release two concept albums previous: 'Absolution' (2003) and 'The 2nd Law'. However, Drones is definitely a massive improvement on The 2nd Law. It's a lot more rockier, less of the dance beats and more of the old Muse we are used to seeing.

Opening track Dead Inside reminds me of The Resistance; very Undisclosed Desires or MK Ultra. Still beat heavy but with a lot of guitar riffs. 'Psycho' has the familiar riff which is know by Muse fan as the live show outtro to Stockholm Syndrome and sets the theme of the album about Drones and brainwashing. Mercy and Reapers are both the electronic rock side of Muse and the album. With Reapers, comes the impressive guitar riffs and stompy beats. Then we go on to The Handler, with it's heavier guitar riffs and an incredible bass line.

In my opinion, one of the strongest songs of the album is Defector with it's powerful lyrics of "Free. Yeah I'm free from society. You can't control me" which is a transition of the first half of the album about controlling of drones and now the second half ,I think, is about the freedom and sudden realisation from all the brainwashing. This then leads on to 'Revolt' all about rebelling from drones. Another favourite of mine is Aftermath, one of two ballads from the album, with it's beautiful lyrics, chilled out bass and guitar riff solo. Definitely can't wait to see how this is performed live on tour.

This contrasts The Globalist with it's heavy rock vibes. Some people are comparing it with Citizen Erased and even calling it Citizen Erased part 2 which I can see where people are coming from as it sounds like a follow up from it. However I would probably compare also to Knights of Cydonia especially the spaghetti western style intro. Also Hysteria and other heavy guitar riff Muse songs like it too. Finally, Drones ends with well, Drones a haunting slow choir like song. It's like a prayer to finish off the album with the finishing lyrics 'Amen'.

What I like about Muse albums is the music interludes which link some of the songs together and with this album it's no exception [Drill Sergeant] preludes Psycho and [JFK] is before Defector. All in all this album is mixed to perfection and is beautifully made. They have definitely comeback with an album that is sure to be another fan favourite like 'Orgins of Symmetry' or 'Absolution'. However, that's my humble-muse fan opinion.^_^

You can listen to the album above on the Spotify player for free apart from The Globalist (sorry the song is only available to premium members >.<)
